Unveiling an era kept hidden by modesty within the refined tradition of Turkish music, this work presents the life and artistic heritage of Tanburi and Composer Dürrü Turan (1885–1961), known as "the hidden pearl of music," to the reader in such a comprehensive manner for the first time. Prepared by the ITU Ottoman-Turkish Music Research Group (OTMAG) through meticulous archival research, the book details Dürrü Turan’s deep-rooted family heritage extending to monumental figures like Musahib-i Şehriyari Sadık Ağa and Dede Efendi, the lineage of his musical training (meşk) inherited from masters such as Tanburi Cemil Bey and Mustafa Servet Bey, and his steadfast stance during the transformative years of the 20th century. Alongside biographical information, the work fills a major gap in the history of Turkish music with its extensive coverage of his composition style, Turkish folk music compilation work, articles, and comprehensive discography. Moving beyond being just a biography, the book offers a rich documentation that includes his works rewritten from his handwritten musical scores, newly published archival documents, and historical photographs. Shedding light on the socio-cultural atmosphere of the period, this study documents the artist's unique style in tanbur performance, his theoretical studies, and his massive repertoire of approximately 1,500 works with academic precision.
